One thing is obvious an irresistible appeal is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their path performing shows at small eateries with their parents. Today, they are multi-time Grammy nominees.

Like all the best bands, they're a close gang. Their videos frequently depict them striding in harmony down the roads of Los Angeles. During performances, they jam with such unfettered joy you inevitably think, "I want to be a piece of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that fans approached us and said, 'Watching you live, I got a drum kit'," says Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "It is the biggest compliment. It is a prize in itself. We have succeeded if we can motivate young girls to make music."

Grammy Nod

The band are speaking from a break, where they're taking a pause after an lengthy tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

They're right now reeling from the news it's been shortlisted for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the first all-female band ever in the running for the prize.

"I follow the lists every year, so it kind of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is announced," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I dreaming'?"

The weight of the accolade is deeply felt by the band.

"We deliberately set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a significant achievement," says Alana. "But we're just thankful for the pioneers that came before us."

Personal Turmoil and Humour

The project came out of a period of transition. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that odd liminal space where you're happy to be free, but not yet ready to start anew.

The themes detail breakups and goodbyes. The sisters desire love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them working out in the moment who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a mantra. You have to consciously practice ignoring the noise and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Development of Style

That developed toughness demanded a fresh approach – more unpolished and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the percussion.

"The drum sound is such a nuanced thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our memoir," laughs Alana. "I always say, our albums cannot begin until we find the perfect drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Humor

The trio's openness shaped the album's rollout, where the sisters shared some of their romantic tales.

A former partner left Este over a health consideration. Alana recalled a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"When you're going through these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no light," notes Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's incredible."

A Secure Legacy

One can easily sense a evolution in the band. Now, Haim are more certain of their position in the music world.

They're festival headliners, with hit albums and an worldwide following.

But the sister act will always be their number one focus.

"Me and my siblings have been making music since I was a young child," concludes Alana. "It feels as if no other path that we were supposed to do. And I'm really thankful we've reached this point and we're still kicking."
