The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was convicted of plotting a military coup in September and sentenced more than over two decades in incarceration, but he continued under confinement pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a preventative measure after fresh information emerged.

This included trying to remove his tracking device and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a possible escape.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the arrest, the judge said intelligence from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's aim to disable the tracking monitor to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His son, his son Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a meeting of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on social media on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or see it all from your mobile device there on your sofa? I invite you to battle with us."

He said the vigil would be so supporters could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Foreign Shelter Risks

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.

They also petitioned that the former president be permitted to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he demanded regular treatment for lung conditions and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

He was found guilty of leading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he knew of a plot which encompassed plans to murder the current president and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was stopped because it failed to get the endorsement of the military leaders. The current president was took office without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on January 8th, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged official structures in the national capital, the capital city.

The law enforcement took action and around 1,500 people were detained.

The justices found that the rioters had been incited by him whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also banned from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The former president called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him running in the 2026 national vote.
