The Evolution of a Cult is often characterized by specific steps.

1. The Big Idea

An inspiring figure or figureheads propose an innovative concept offering a panacea for struggling players.

And so it goes. Plans are in motion to storm the compound in Australia. Pressure is mounting. Conflict emerges from the sidelines. An isolated player, exposed, shivering, the phrase ATTACKING MINDSET smeared across his chest as a symbol, has stumbled through the lines and is being led away in secrecy for a temporary assignment in county cricket.

Do you recall the early days, when everything was fresh? The era of early Bazball, of Bazball without brains.

2. The Honeymoon Phase

Movement founders promise a fresh beginning, a brighter tomorrow, camaraderie, success within a community with shared faith in the philosophy.

What was this thing back then? Players celebrating enjoying success. Tattoos. Muscles. Determination. Peak performance vibes. Admittedly, The squad will claim they don’t use the label, amusingly since it’s not recognized, what exactly did I just watch?

But we know the concept. It’s the player attempting a move so unconventional it defies description. It’s the adrenaline of the captain at his peak, a look that says: focused titan, rugged appearance, untamed style, so authentically Modern Savage you half-expect to glance over and notice he’s fielding in the field stripped to the waist and cradling a wild salmon.

It’s Ben Duckett often seen speaking publicly, resembling a happy little woodland creature formally attired, saying stuff like we are actively deconstructing the orange. Certainly, the energy, initially, was only good energy.

3. A New Life

Building period. Togetherness strengthened via memorization of the cult’s slogans. These beliefs are often illogical to prove commitment.

Am I alone? The criticism, the outrage, the sense of betrayal post-defeat appears excessive, overdone. The performance was poor in Perth, as they often do in Australia. They were dominated while bowling for a couple of hours as plans unraveled, manipulated by the opponent playing aggressively but smarter, adaptive to conditions, a performer excelling with brilliance.

And now we have this the attacks, the rage, the perception of the team as a kind of abomination. The consensus is that losing isn’t enough, they should be dismantled, to be purged, destroyed, defeated via traditional methods of the bowler’s action, the simple basics of the bowler, marking achievements humbly as if receiving a nice new fishing rod. What impact will this have?

4. External Conflict

Problems arise because of mistakes. But the cult cannot admit errors. It turns to anger towards critics.

In truth, a few days before the upcoming game, we are at an intriguing moment in the story of this approach. England could quite easily win overseas with bold tactics. Probably, defeat could come swiftly. And if they do lose it appears we really might be entering the death cult phase.

Before that happens, several aspects worth saying on the topic. More than two years ago, during the initial excitement, of light and heat, I wrote an article calling it a phenomenon. Criticism followed, which proved the point because everyone knows the best way of proving lack of cult status is when its acolytes respond with anger denying scrutiny of the philosophy.

What has happened recently are fascinating. Criticism of the approach is now the trend. We have a uniformly angry internet, disappointed commentators, pictures of upset supporters abroad cheated out of three days of cricket, similar to people wanting fairness.

On the other hand, there is the broader context of the opponent’s mixed deep-seated frustration with the aggressive tourists, claiming, your cherished traditions and have developed as part of your identity culturally from us, it’s just a joke in the end old boy.

Here lies the truth. All movements are similar. The style was a trend because cricket is a cult. In fact, English cricket has always been a cult, a circle, an elite gathering, an insular community with centuries of tradition and mystery behind it. This has always been a place where power and access are hoarded. It’s the colonial game of the nation, the pioneering brand. And notably, the nation has its own culture, a structure of hidden ranks, a monarchy still exists.

England’s cricketers have been isolated in this system for years. In trying to escape from it, to build a better atmosphere, they are just repeating their past, building another enclosure, a limited community, but now with a new team and a leader who wants you to be yourself provided you conform.

Live where your feet are. Confront risks. However much you change, you’re always basically in the same place.
