Just as Storm Claudia hit the northwest the previous evening, the home side swept United aside at the their home ground. It was a convincing three goal win for their manager's side owing to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a display that firmly established their championship potential as they reinforced their place at the WSL pinnacle.

Consecutive Setbacks for United

This outcome marked back-to-back league losses for Skinner's side for the maiden instance since spring 2024, placing them seven points off the league leaders with their championship aspirations in serious doubt.

United’s capability to juggle league and continental soccer with a limited team has been a frequently analyzed issue since they qualified for the UCL. Considering the schedule, it always felt like this was the matchday that would fully examine this capability. Unfortunately for the opposition, they appeared tired from start to finish, the landmark win against the French side clearly having left its mark.

Team Changes

Dominant First Half

The storm clouds started to accumulate for Skinner and his side from the first whistle. The prominent Kerstin Casparij picked the ball up on the right before sending a pinpoint ground pass for Bunny Shaw to force home. A short time later, they had a third goal after a quick shift in possession saw Hemp given the opportunity to drive a shot home from range.

Final Period

The clearest adjustment came from Skinner at the break as Melvine Malard was introduced for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was too late to alter the outcome of the contest. Former Manchester City player Jess Park came most likely to score, striking the post, but the away team were offensively poor and failed to record a one shot on goal.

The hosts, on the other hand, could have extended their advantage when a superb Miedema pass sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to fail to convert but it did not affect the result to the winning team. Previously unable to defeat any side who placed above them in the prior term, the manager's side now have wins against the Gunners and Manchester United to place them in a commanding standing after the opening fixtures.
