Pick of the Week
The Substance Film
Coralie Fargeat's unflinching satire examines the demanding standards for female beauty as well as the feared consequences of growing older. This creates a younger clone called Sue, leading to a progressively parasitic dynamic among both women. This Friday, the streaming service Paramount+
The Woman in Cabin 10
This Agatha Christie-esque mystery stars the talented actress as Laura, a top-notch writer who opts for a break from reporting on world issues to embark on a luxury cruise alongside an ailing wealthy inheritor and charitable figure, her spouse, and other affluent individuals. But after an unknown lady disappears from the ship overnight and all passengers insists she wasn't real, Laura's investigative instincts awaken. Out now, on Netflix
Presence
Soderbergh challenges his film-making abilities through this clever ghostly tale shot entirely through the eyes of a ghost. When a household including mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe occupies their new suburban house, the filming device – as the unseen entity – shadows their actions. Chloe seems aware of the supernatural presence, and it looks like guarding her. But why? This is an entertaining concept that doesn't outstay its welcome, featuring a surprise you might not see coming. October 11th, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, the Sky channel
Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy
Cage fully commits to his eccentric image in this self-referential adventure. Recruited by government spies to gather intel on the suspected cartel boss, his unique performing skills is put to the test. Saturday 11 October, prime time, Channel 4
This Creepy Thriller
The director's claustrophobic thriller stands strong without requiring a follow-up. Located in 1970s Colorado, a series of disappearances has made the children anxious. Once Finney is kidnapped by “the Grabber” and held captive in a cellar, he dreads the worst. However, the non-functional line in the room continues to ring, with eerie communicators providing assistance, while the intuitive nightmares of his sister Gwen could save him. A solid creepfest. October 11th, late evening, on Film4
The Eyes of Tammy Faye
In the conflict between God and Mammon, the victory is clear for Mammon in Showalter's wonderfully garish film adaptation regarding the shamed religious broadcaster and her criminal husband. The actor acts as the corrupt Bakker, who states early on, asserting religious justification for riches. The couple commence profiting from the people's Christian beliefs. It's an extravaganza of poor styling, bad makeup and hypocrisy, though Jessica Chastain succeeds to depict the character with compassion. Next Tuesday, late night, on Film4
